It smells like disaster

happens almost every year something strange and surprising - and usually something extremely unpleasant, often tragic. The Russians attribute this peculiarity to their country and happy to ignore the global nature of this phenomenon - from the bombing of Hiroshima to Iraq's invasion of Kuwait, death of Princess Diana, or Hurricane Katrina in the U.S..

I still think that the Russians consider the month of August with good reason as "their" tragic month.
